SAN FRANCISCO -- A novel retrovirus implicated in prostate cancer appears to be transmitted much the way HIV is, researchers found.
The recently-discovered xenotropic murine leukemia related virus -- dubbed XMRV -- likely spreads through contact with blood and semen, Eric A. Klein, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic, and colleagues reported here at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.
Semen dramatically enhanced infectivity of the virus, allowing it to slip more easily into human cells, they found.
"It's behaving just like the two other retroviruses that cause disease in humans," Klein told MedPage Today.
Infectious disease experts, too, have likened their scramble to make sense of the virus to the early days of HIV research, but caution that there has yet to be any clear causal evidence showing that XMRV leads to disease.

The virus has also been implicated in a high number of chronic fatigue syndrome cases in an apparent outbreak, but studies have been unable to confirm the link in other cohorts.

The 'idea' that the WPI/US study cohort came from an "outbreak" is part of the Wessely/UK/pysch lobby's disinformation campaign re:XMRV. The US cohort came from clinics all over the US which had patients from UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia. Two groups of UK ME patients have had their blood tested in the US and about 50% have tested positive and the tests have been further refined since they tested positive. Anything with Wessely or McClure backing, or their Dutch clones, will not find any biological cause for ME, because they are dedicated to the psychological explanation.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Blood
Mr. Drew: To ask the Secretary of State for Health for what reasons people with myalgic encephalomyelitis may not donate blood. [321320]
Ann Keen: People with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), are not able to donate blood until they have fully recovered. The reasons for this are: first, blood donors need to be in good health, and people with ME/CFS often experience a range of symptoms which could be made worse by donating blood; and second, as the causes of ME/CFS are not currently fully understood, people with the condition are deferred from donating blood as a precautionary measure to protect the safety of the blood supply for patients.
