The abusive ME patient

by Matthew Smith on Friday, November 19, 2010

This is the text of a complaint letter I just submitted to the BBC regarding the ME storyline that is ongoing in Casualty, the BBC medical drama, which features an ME sufferer mentally abusing his wife (a nurse!) and we are told that he is to be shown abusing her physically as well. I thought this was a very unrealistic portrayal given that ME sufferers are far more likely to be victims of abuse than perpetrators.

You can find the BBC's complaint form here (please don't copy my letter, as it will make it look like an orchestrated complaint-bomb campaign):

Thank you for writing to the BBC about the storyline of Casualty. I was initially pleased that at long last, ME was being included in a storyline, but now, I'm so disappointed that the sufferer is portrayed as an abuser. Honestly, do they really think that someone with ME could have the energy to hit his wife? And are they trying to say that people with ME play some kind of psychological games? I don't know what they're trying to portray but at the moment, it seems they've got it all wrong.
