Emily's secret

Re: At last, I have discovered the secret of Emily's 14 lost years, Daily Mail, 12 February 2011

If it turns out that Emily Wilcox's chronic illness is Coeliac (At last, I have discovered the secret of Emily's 14 lost years, Daily Mail, 12 February 2011) and that she might be cured, or at least improved, by a gluten free diet, it will be great news not only for her but M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) sufferers, with whom she has been associated for 14 years.

It will also prove once and for all that Emily did not recover from M.E. in 2006 with a regime of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET), which is all that is available on the NHS. even though all research shows that CBT has no lasting benefit for M.E. sufferers and GET makes a majority worse.

It also demonstrates that the Lightning Process, which surprisingly Emily took in 2007, after she claimed to have already been recovered by something else, did nothing more for her than common sense pacing advice would do.

It will be hard to ignore this evidence and suggest that the £1.5m announced by the Medical Research Council should be directed to more promising biomedical research, for which M.E. sufferers have been crying out for decades.

Yours sincerely
Dr John H Greensmith
