Letter in reply to Health trust’s error causes furore in Redbridge, Ilford Recorder, 14 May 2011
Since all research to date, together with the unfortunate experiences of too many patients who have tried them, has shown that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is ineffective and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) makes a majority of M.E sufferers worse, some irrecoverably so, it is astonishing that both Martin Arber’s local Redbridge group and national organisations, such as Sir Peter Spencer’s Action for ME, should wish to keep open any clinic in the country where these are the two principal treatments given to people with M.E.(Health trust’s error causes furore in Redbridge, Ilford Recorder, 14 May 2011).
On the contrary, this organisation calls on GPs to stop referrals and clinics to suspend treatments, pending further research, on scientific and ethical grounds. It seems only common sense that no treatment is better than one which does you no good. or may do you harm
Yours sincerely

Sir Peter Spncer is non executive director (he needs another job? AfME pay him £80,000 a year for what appears to be part time work) at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in bath, where M.E. is treated by psychological interventions alone and the 'CFS' clinic is part of the Mental health services.
ReplyDeleteGiven that ME has been classified by the WHO as a neurological illness since 1969, this is outrageous and sir Peter should not be a party to it.
