XMRV causes slow but life-long infections in humans; the virus continues to replicate despite of the host’s immune system. For instance, persistent infection by hepatitis B and C viral infection ultimately leads to liver cancer (Hu and Ludgate 2007; Koike 2007). Another example is HTLV-1, the first identified human retrovirus, which, as with all retroviruses, infects for life (Poiesz et al. 1981) after integrating into the host genome.
